Entering downtown Reno

The slogan found on the iconic Reno Arch is “The Biggest Little City in the World,” for good reason. There is so much to see and do in Reno and it is easy to get there. From San Francisco it is only a three and a half hour drive on Interstate 80 or if you prefer flying it is just over an hour to fly to Reno’s international airport.

When visiting during the winter, there are many ski resorts including Mount Rose, which is a 20 to 30 minute drive away. The ski resort offers a shuttle on specific days for only $20 roundtrip. Check their website for their shuttle service (reservations recommended), lessons, and skiing. Mount Rose base elevation is 8,260 feet, with great views overlooking Reno in the valley below.

What to do after a day of skiing? As an alternative to a ski lodge experience, consider overnighting in luxury or in an economy full service hotel. Choose a resort in Reno and take advantage of their extensive amenities.

Atlantis Casino Resort Spa extended (the author) a complimentary room at their award-winning hotel to see first hand their outstanding complete package of hotel, casino, spa and dining experiences. The hotel sparkles with that wow factor and the spa was amazing. Atlantis encourages guests to spend the day in their 30,000 sf spa; it is not just for messages – find services not seen anywhere else. It can be an all day experience.

Treated to dinner at the Atlantis Steakhouse, awarded Best Overall Steakhouse by Open Table, the tantalizing meal was prepared perfectly. Dennis Houge, Executive Chef, recommended the signature dish, Cowboy rib-eye, definitely a meal to enjoy. After the meal order dessert and have ice cream made at your table with liquid nitrogen, worth saving room for. Thank you again to Atlantis, everything was perfect.

The heart of downtown Reno is along the Truckee River. The river starts at Lake Tahoe and winds its way through the mountains and across the valley through the heart of Reno. There is a River Walk area that boasts numerous events along the river. It is not like the river walk in San Antonio, it’s more like the river that goes through Breckenridge, CO. This is a very active place to be year ‘round. Be sure to check the calendar for upcoming events on their website.

If this article sparks an interest, be delighted to find it covers only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Maybe it is time to come discover Reno again today.

Side Trip

A side trip to Lake Tahoe is a fun excursion. At the north end of Lake Tahoe is the famous ski resort area, Incline Village, NV. It’s a quick 45-minute drive. Looking for more casinos and action drive just a little further to South Lake Tahoe. And enjoy the beautiful drive through the dense forests and vast vistas along the way.
