The city of Aberystwyth was a fantastic discovery with its sweeping seafront and promenade. After visiting several UK coastal towns, it has become one of our favorites. The castle here is an Edwardian fortress built in the late 1300s.
You can stroll along the promenade for over a mile passing many local points of interest. When we were researching places to visit in the UK, the first picture we saw of Aberystwyth made us think of Monte Carlo. It became a must visit destination.
Cliff Railway
When you are done wandering around town, head over to the electric railway. The Aberystwyth Electric Cliff Railway will take you to the top of the cliff with fantastic views, a game room, ice cream kiosk, and a café too. Looking for something unusual, you will also find at the top of the hill a camera obscura.
Aberystwyth Castle Grounds – Ruins
The castle grounds are free to explore with its landmark ruins of a seaside castle built in the late 13th century by Edward I. Kids enjoy climbing over, and around the old castle walls. It is located near the War Memorial and offers excellent views of the waterfront.
Celtic Hill Fort
If you have more time to explore, drive to a hill called Pen Dinas where there is an extensive Iron Age, Celtic hillfort. It is one of the largest and most important hillforts in west Wales.
Rheidol Railway
Another train ride option, you may want to jump on, is a trip on the Vale of Rheidol Railway. You will see some of the most stunning views of Rheidol Valley as you rumble up the mountain. The round trip ride will take you from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge and back again. Along the way you may see birds of prey, like Red Kite and Buzzards as they are regularly soaring high above the valley with breathtaking views that can be enjoyed by all.
From London’s Euston Station, it takes about 4 to 5 hours to get to Aberystwyth and it is well worth the trip! Aberystwyth is a beautiful area full of many things to experience and explore.
